The Horimont-Stellung was built between 1912 and 1916 by the Germans to defend the city of Metz. It was divided into three groups, Horimont 1, 2 and 3. The quarry is specifically dug as an extra obstacle for the enemy. A total of ten infantry casemates covered most of the quarry so it would have been very hard to pass. Furthermore there were several shelters and observation bunkers, and four mobile emplacements for 5cm cannons. All concrete structures are still present and most are well preserved, walking through the quarry is like stepping back in time! (Just don’t step on grenades, they are still everywhere)
